It looks like a couple of users over at XtremeSystems.org have attempted to remove the IHS of the Core i7 Extreme 965 CPU with tragic results.

credit for this disturbing image goes to clo007 from XS.org
I have to question the wisdom of attempting to remove it in this manner when we already knew that Intel’s been soldering the IHS on for years! I may still attempt something like this with a method I cooked up back when I popped the top on an X6800 (which lived)….

oh brilliant.
People with more money than sense or those who doesn’t care about free items (this one seems to be a ES sample).
Picture said it was dead before. But if they have been soldering them on for years how the hell did people get them off before? And holy cow Xilikon, you post on like almost every single thing i look at on the intarweb
one common thing was to put them in a hot pan, to heat the top of the processor enough to melt the solder
Wow… It’s magically RETARDED…
Ouch! But as mentioned it was dead before.
As well as a free ES probably,
That takes some hurt off.
I’ve thought up a better way to remove the IHS instead of the risky pry and flambe method.
Why not just lap the IHS until you have an almost paper thin layer of metal on top. Then with something like a dremel, carefully cut away the metal around the chip (leaving some leeway), then pry off the remaining IHS.
With time and patience, you should be able to remove almost 99% of the IHS.
