Well I decided to do some follow up performance numbers that include more drives as well as RAID-0 results with the Seagate 7200.2 drives, and the long and short of it is that I will be replacing my Samsung F1 with a pair of Seagate 7200.2s when I do my next reformat.

The performance difference is not staggering, but when combined with the reduced noise, reduced power consumption and reduced footprint (I”ll be sticking the 2.5″ drives to the back of my motherboard with industrial velcro), it’s an easy decision to make.

Here are some comparisons to some other drives that I found interesting. The mobile drive’s performance looks quite disappointing in direct comparison to the F1 750GB, but when compared to a more equivalent drive (Seagate 7200.10 160GB) it’s a closer fight.

Wow very nice, sticking it to the back of your motherboard! I like that idea.
But im wondering, how would one go abouts in mounting one of these in their HDD bays?
Im sure we will need some sort of adapter, but then it just brings it back to the original size!?
Well i guess then the power consumption factors come into play, but im sure it will cost alot more per GB.
Ahhh pros and cons for everything! LoL
Nice work! cough cough MIPS block…..
Haha the MIPS block article is done and scheduled to be released in the next day or two. I don’t remember when.
As for mounting these if you don’t want to make it ghetto-fabulous, you could always use a hot swap dual drive bay unit from Addonics: http://www.ncix.com/products/index.php?sku=34240&vpn=AE25SNAP2SA&manufacture=Addonics
Remember too that noise is another factor. For a quiet desktop PC, silent 120mm fans can only get you so far. That hard drive will still grind away. 2.5″ drives are much quieter than 3.5″ drives.
