NONE SHALL PASS - Monty Python Sound Effects in Sid Meyer’s Civilization IIPosted by: Linus on 11th June 2008I have made a discovery. The Black Knight from Monty Python and the Holy Grail is present in Civilization II. In a manner of speaking… Check out this youtube video of the famous fight between Arthur and the Black Knight. Compare the sounds at 0:46 and 0:59 to this WAV file that I’ve attached below If you still have your old Civilization II disc you can find this file in the SOUND directory to verify for yourself. It’s unmistakable. I had this realization while watching random Monty Python clips on YouTube at about 3 in the morning and I was going to post it right away, but I thought better of it and decided to verify while I was in a better state of mind. This shocking discovery leads me to suspect that something as culturally influential as Monty Python may be present in more than just one video game…. Please leave a comment under this blog post if you know of any others. |

Two off the top of my head:
Paradox’ game Crusader Kings uses a sample from ‘Grail’ when the plague hits a province: “Bring out your dead”.
Their recent game ‘Europa Universalis: Rome’ contains several small Life of Brian references.

It’s not a game, but the first song of the album “Follow the blind” it’s the medieval chant in Holy Grail.
Apart from that, you can see that in Worms, the famous game, one of the most powerful weapons is the Holy Grenade. The soundclip is taken straight out of the movie.
Please Google “Stock Audio” and also observe that hundreds of movies and videogames share the same gunshot and bullet impact sounds.
Thanks to everyone for contributing.
I doubt they are from the same stock audio purchase to be perfectly honest. Eric Idle couldn’t exactly fire up google when he needed a sound effect.
Either way I don’t think it’s terribly scandalous that Civ II borrowed the sound. Just goes to show Monty Python’s influence is even broader than we thought.
Mabye not, but he could buy a stock audio pack for “swordfight sounds” from a studio. I’ve heard the same sound you’re commenting about on various shows on the History Channel too.
That could be very true. I guess it was mostly just amusing to me to recognize the Civ II sound effects as I was watching Monty Python in the wee hours of the morning
Linus, stop uploading BMP images, have pity on the dial-up-ers
