Razer Mamba & Carcharias Fist Look (NCIX Tech Tips #38)

Posted by: Linus on 16th April 2009

Yeah. It’s pretty much the best Tech Tips ever. I apologize in advance for the intro. I th0ught it would be funny, then it turned out really brutal, but then it got so brutal it got funny again.

I had a lot of fun with these products and making this edition of Tech Tips, and I think that they both represent a compelling value as unique products in the market. Without further ado: The Razer Mamba #5….

This was the second most stressful tech tips I’ve ever filmed. The most stressful one was the first one where I had no idea what I was doing pretty much.

That should give you some idea what sort of things stress me out… Haha.

These CPUs are samples from AMD, so breaking them at least doesn’t cost the company money, but it’s a matter of personal pride that I’ve never damaged a CPU beyond usability, even though I did run one through the wash once, and I did drop this entire tray of OEM parts on the floor (that’s how the pin got bent in the first place). The 720 Black Edition is working awesome and I think you’ll find this short & unexpected edition of NCIX Tech Tips quite enjoyable.

It’s been an AMD sorta week in the Tech Tips lab! We covered how to unlock your Phenom II X3 710 or 720 Black edition and turn it into a quad core.

We’ve had a lot of comments about this video from people concerned about the legal ramifications of this video. All I have to say is this: Don’t worry about it.

This is no different from overclocking a 2.8GHz processor and turning it into a 3.6GHz processor (something we’re going to cover very shortly). It’s also no different from unlocking “pipes” on older generation graphics cards before the manufacturers took that option away from us.

It’s not a guarantee, but if you get one that unlocks, it’s a terrific value :)

That’s right. A 9 cell battery. I realize in retrospect that many people may not have taken this seriously when we released it on account of it being April 1st.

It’s a very short Tech Tips, but consider it a precursor to the updated netbook round up we have coming!

Now THIS is a cool product. I’m going to start with answering some of the questions that have shown up under the video as it’s been out for a few days already.

1. It does not appear to damage the screen on this glossy notebook belonging to Terren.
2. The magnet has no effect on your computer. Notebooks use LCD screens which are not affected by magnets.
3. It should not be used on a desktop because notebook screens are designed to be tougher and desktop screens are damaged more easily by touch (from the manufacturer).
4. It works on screens up to about 15.4″

This thing is really neat and impressed the heck out of us at the office.

ASUS Eee Top First Look (NCIX Tech Tips #32)

Posted by: Linus on 12th March 2009

We really couldn’t figure out a way to showcase this product that made any sense…

Obviously in the lab we can showcase the form factor, accessories, and the general look of the product, but it doesn’t really tell the story of how to practically use an item like this. Finally we decided to show it in its natural habitat, we needed to show it in a house. Neither the Cameraman nor I want people seeing our houses, so we settled for the local IKEA. We’re pretty lucky we didn’t get kicked out wandering around putting the Eee Top in places where we thought it would make sense in an average home.

Overall I think the product makes *more* sense in an Asian or European market where space saving is huge, but it’s still a cool gadget!

EVGA GeForce GTS 250 First Look (NCIX Tech Tips #31)

Posted by: Linus on 10th March 2009

Kinda a silly edition of NCIX Tech Tips. We got a sample of the eVGA GTS 250 512MB graphics card that launched today. As usual we don’t really run any benchmarks, but rather we try to talk about what’s interesting and new. Not much interesting or new about this card, but the new price is definitely a reason to be excited. There are some launch promotions coming that should be very exciting. It’s good to see widespread availability right on launch day, but we’ve come to expect that from nVidia. Without further ado, enjoy our humorous first look at the GTS 250!

LG X120 Netbook First Look (NCIX Tech Tips #30)

Posted by: Linus on 9th March 2009

Well it’s taken me a while to get this one up on my page. I’ve been spending some time playing around with the new AMD DDR3 CPUs and we’re going to be putting together a short overclocking guide in the next little while. I also had some success with unlocking the 4th core on one of the two samples that I received, so the news is that IT WORKS!

Anyway, that’s all nothing to do with this video, which is about the LG X120. Hope you enjoy it!

Well someone commented on the blog video saying I should have done a follow up talking about the actual performance of the unit.

I was reading that thinking, “Well why doesn’t he just watch the NCIX Tech Tips episode about it?”

Oh yeah. I haven’t uploaded it yet… Here it is :)
