A small problem with running 4 SSD RAID-0 on ICH10RPosted by: Linus on 19th December 2008I’m far from releasing all of my benchmarks and experiences with this new setup, but I have run into a couple of problems worth mentioning in my quest for the best possible storage performance. First I attemped my new setup with a 3ware 9690SA-4I and I created a forum thread over at XtremeSystems.org documenting my failure with that… What a waste of time that card was… After that I decided to move on to the Onboard, but there ARE bottlenecks and compromises that have to be made doing that. I don’t notice the same freezing/hitching or lock ups that some have claimed exist with Jmicron controllers on cheap SSDs, but I *do* notices a sluggishness at times. I don’t think it’s related to the SSDs, but rather to the southbridge. One way to replicate it reliably is the Windows Experience Index. If anyone can shed some light I’m very interested to hear why this happens during the CPU Test… |

I have used 3ware/AMCC controllers for a long time now, and I noticed that some combinations of options can get you very bad side effects. First, if you don’t have a battery attached on the controller, the 9650/9690 series run in a kind of a “safe” mode that disable the write cache and syncs every write directly to the disk. Needless to say, this is the worst performance mode you can get.
You may notice in the 3DM2 manager, in the controller settings tab, that there is a “StorSave” option: This option allows you to bypass the safe mode or on the contrary force it.
If you don’t have the BBU (battery backed unit), try running the card in StorSave “Performance” mode. This forces the controller to use the cache.
Also, did you upgrade the controller to the last 9.5.1.1 codeset (=firmware AND driver upgrade)? I noticed a huge performance increase between 9.4.x and 9.5.x codesets.
I’d be very interested to know if this solves your performance problem with that controller.
Hello everyone!
I’ve been use 3ware 9650SE 4 LPML controller since 2006 with 4 raptors 36gb in Raid 0. I encountered one review about BBU performance that talk controller in Balanced mode withou BBU and performance mode with BBU,but I cannot find it anymore. By the way, I don’t understood the core of the question because was a forum and 2 people was a bad discussion about that.
My question is: How diference is noticeably in Balanced mode with BBU vs Performance mode without BBU? When I put performance mode in the controller BIOS, is really run on “safe” mode?
Thanks a lot and I’m sorry about my poor english.
