NCIX Tech Tips #45 – Acer Aspire Timeline First Look

Posted by: Linus on 13th August 2009

Well I (and everyone else around the office) was REALLY impressed by the Timeline. A big part of the reason we even did this episode is to ensure that we’ve got a way to properly demonstrate to customers how awesome this thing is. Most netbooks had good build quality but shoddily slow hardware (sorry Atom), tiny screens (9″ is frankly unusable for me…), and horrendous keyboards (bilingual?? AUGH!).

“But Linus”, you might say, “You can get some pretty nice small form factor laptops from the likes of Sony or Toshiba!”

Yeah sure. If I wanted to pay a $800 premium just for the “ooh look it’s small like a netbook, but fast like a notebook” factor.

Enter the Acer Aspire Timeline series. These are better engineered in terms of build quality than any $699 notebook I’ve ever seen, and they’re actually a decent size! Real Core architecture based CPUs (don’t let the Pentium name fool you) with ultra low power consumption. This. Thing. Is. Awesome.

MSI P55-GD65 Base Clock Button Adjustment

Posted by: Linus on 12th August 2009

Finally got permission to show something that I filmed a few days ago. Here’s me working on some overclocking testing on the MSI P55-GD65 motherboard. This button is pretty cool when you’re running benchmarks and you want to play around with the frequency. I haven’t tried OC Genie yet, but that’s coming next!

Got a new video on my blog today. I’m checking out the Aspire Revo on my park bench. Reason for the park bench is (as before) the good natural lighting and proximity to the office. Haha. Basically I sneak out for a few minutes, make my video, then get back to work as if nothing happened *whistles casually*

Hope you enjoy it!

Video Blog Post – MSI P55-GD65 LGA1156 Motherboard

So I got a great package today… in the mail. Was pretty excited to open this and shot a quick video showing some highlights of this interesting new, unreleased product. This is completely unedited and just shot on my camera in video mode, so the quality kinda sucks. Sorry :p

User-submitted NES PC Build

Posted by: Linus on 5th August 2009

One of the users on the NCIX Gaming Steam group has been talking about his ongoing NES PC build for quite some time and I promised him that if it was cool enough I’d post it up on my blog.

After many weeks of “should I order this” and “this piece is coming” he finally sent me a few (30MB… Ever heard of resizing, dude?) pictures of his build so here they are.

He went with an nVidia ION platform because this is intended to be HD ready and able to playback Blu-Ray movies (hence the blu-ray drive). It’s a ghetto mod, but a very cool little project. He (and I) hopes you like it.

NCIX Tech Tips #44 – LG NB41 NAS with BLU-RAY Writer

Posted by: Linus on 3rd August 2009

I can’t believe we’ve filmed over 40 Tech Tips in the short 2 years that we’ve been running this project. I guess a lot of them were in that month where we filmed like 7, but we’re looking at getting back on track in terms of release schedule so that we can bring you more like 4 per month.

This is an interesting product in the sense that it’s a unique offering in the market. I think for me personally I’d rather have the blu-ray drive in my PC and a regular 4 bay NAS, but I definitely see the purpose of having the drive in there because it gives you that many more options for archiving your data.
